In Emirati folklore, there is a tale called “The Headless Camel,” or a camel with its head severed, whose spirit remained in its body. It came back to life headless, wandering the streets and alleys, with blood flowing from its severed neck. It began to terrify travelers at midday or those walking in the dark nights, approaching empty roads. People had to be cautious, for they might hear the sound of its footsteps behind them, but they must not turn around. A headless camel, unlike other camels, was slaughtered many years ago but did not die. Now, it roams the roads, vengeful towards all who see it, following them with the intent of revenge. If you hear a sound or a groan, do not turn around so as not to provoke its emotions. Do not look back—keep walking or flee forward.
In this work, I imagined what it would look like if the camel chose to have a different head. Would you turn around if you saw it, or not?
